Starting a Conversation

Learn how to start a new conversation with Second Seat.

Creating a New Conversation

  1. Click the New Chat button in the sidebar
  2. Type your question or research topic in the message box
  3. Press Enter or click Send to submit

Choosing a Mode

Next to the send button, you'll see a mode dropdown with three options:

  • Chat (default) — For legal research questions and analysis. Fast, streaming responses.
  • Agent — For taking actions like creating cases, searching documents, or linking conversations. See Agent Mode for details.
  • Research — For deep case law research. Searches CourtListener, analyzes cases, and writes a structured research memo. See Research Mode for details.

Click the dropdown to switch between modes at any time during a conversation.

Linking to a Case

You can link conversations to specific cases for better organization:

  1. Before starting your conversation, select a case from the dropdown
  2. All messages in this conversation will be associated with that case
  3. You can view all conversations linked to a case from the case details page

Tips for Getting Started

  • Be specific about the legal issue you're researching
  • Include relevant facts when asking about case strategy
  • Mention the jurisdiction (NY) if researching specific statutes
