Starting a Conversation

Learn how to start a new conversation with Second Seat.

Creating a New Conversation

  1. Click the New Chat button (or tap the + icon on mobile)
  2. Type your question, research topic, or request in the message box
  3. Press Enter or click Send

Second Seat handles everything in a single conversation — legal research, case management, document analysis, and deep research all work without switching modes or interfaces.

Linking to a Case

When you start a new conversation, you'll see your recent active cases displayed as chips below the greeting. Tap one to link the conversation to that case.

Linking to a case means:

  • Second Seat has context about the case (facts, charges, timeline, legal theories from previous conversations)
  • New information discussed in this conversation is automatically extracted and added to the case knowledge base
  • You can view all conversations linked to a case from the case details page

You can also link or unlink a case at any time using the Attach to case button in the chat input area, or just ask: "link this conversation to the Smith case."

Tips for Getting Started

  • Be specific about the legal issue you're researching
  • Include relevant facts when asking about case strategy
  • Mention jurisdiction if it differs from your default (e.g., "under California law..." or "in NJ...")
  • Link to a case to give Second Seat the full context of what you're working on
  • Ask for what you need — Second Seat will use the right tools automatically (case lookup, statute search, deep research, etc.)
